Wrays Content with Content

The Internet is arguably the most significant source of information in the workplace today, and in some cases the most significant distraction. With so many employees relying on the Internet to complete their day-to-day tasks, how can businesses ensure their employees use it responsibly and stay productive, without looking like Big Brother?

Wrays Intellectual Property in Perth answered this question by utilising the content filtering features on Endian’s Unified Threat Management system.

Endian’s UTM advanced content filtering capabilities give businesses the ability to control which employees can access the Internet, what they can view and when they can view it.

Wrays Intellectual Property’s IT Services Manager, Mr Andy Crowhurst, said that Endian’s content filtering features provide an additional security measure for the firm’s network.

“Wrays is in the process of virtualising its IT infrastructure and the Endian UTM software complements this strategy,” Mr Crowhurst said.

“Endian’s content filtering capabilities allow us to set controls and exclusions on certain sites and web content to ensure our resources are protected from misuse and that inappropriate content is not accessible on our network.”

“Endian was the ideal choice for us due to its straightforward deployment, ease of use and low ongoing cost of ownership which is particularly important these days. Our capital and operating costs have been reduced and our network is more secure,” he said.

Veritech Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, and Endian Distribution Partner for Australia and New Zealand, Mr Livio Mazzon said that Endian’s advanced content filtering capabilities are often overlooked by potential buyers.

“Users are often sold on Endian’s network protection features such as its firewall, virus and spam filtering and intrusion detection, however the content filtering components of the UTM are just as important in today’s digital age,” Mr Mazzon said.

“Many workplaces are losing hours of staff productivity on a daily basis due to personal web surfing. Rather than being heavy handed and banning personal Internet use altogether, Endian allows businesses to find that middle ground and grant reasonable personal Internet use without compromising their reputation or network security.”

“The flexibility of Endian’s content filtering makes it extremely attractive to workplaces of all sizes. Businesses can use Endian to select which employees or workstations can access the internet and can implement password verification if required. They can place restrictions on when the Internet can be accessed with different controls being set for lunch times, weekends and after hours use. Bypasses can be set up for users who need less restrictive access and different rules can be applied depending on whether the user is browsing with a desktop or laptop computer or via a smartphone or tablet computer,” he said.

Standard content filtering features are also part of the Endian package, such as the ability to block specific websites or content types (gaming, adult sites etc.) and blacklisting and whitelising capabilities. Endian uses the popular open-source 'Dansguardian' proxy system to help detect web content and give it a suitable rating and all web browsing which traverses the Endian content filter can be set to be simultaneously scanned for viruses.
